Worthy

What a loaded word this is! It implies goodness, and the sense that something we have done is the source of that goodness. Is that politician worthy of my vote? Is that doctor worthy of my trust? Is that friend worthy of my love?

In the most far-reaching sense, it is God who is worthy of everything we need or desire. God is the ultimate in worth. When we are looking for eternal value, God is the source. The amazing thing is that God, in his infinite goodness, has created each and every person as a creature of worth! We are created in God’s image and likeness. We are worthy of respect, love, and trust. At our core, we are worthy.

As we walk through life, this worthiness can be masked by our choices to be less than we are created to be. We can choose evil. We can choose sinfulness, pride, greed, anger, and sloth. But the fact remains: We are worthy in the eyes of God, and so is each of his created children.

It may be easier to see the worth of others than it is to see our own worth. We can admire the holiness of the saints or the heroes of our day. We might think “I could never be like them.” We are not called to “be like them.” We are each worthy to live the life God created us to live. We will discover his direction as we go step by step through our life, open to God’s leading.

The next time we feel a sense of meaninglessness, we can tell ourselves, “I am worthy. God created me for his purposes. I can reach down deep in my soul to see and act from that worthiness.”
