The Gift of Transience

How we long to capture the gift of transient things! The wonder of a newborn baby, the first day of school, the beauty of the seasons! It all seems too good to be true, and we say, “I wish they could stay this way forever!”

Sometimes we enter Advent with this same mood. “I love Christmas! I wish it could stay this way forever!”

God has a different plan for his world and for us. He calls us each to change, to grow, to become a new creation. That means we live in a state of impermanence, a time of becoming, not only being. That means we must recognize that although today is a precious gift, it is just for now. Tomorrow will come, whether we like it or not.

So what do we do with this changing time? We stop and admire it! We soak in the joy of today with its glittery decorations and music surrounding us. We watch the ballets and admire the gifts of young people at school performances. We choose gifts for our family and remember how much we love them, and they love us.

And we take time. We sit quietly and marvel that GOD loved ME so much that he came to earth as a baby to save me for his eternal plan. We contemplate the miracle of this new beginning, of the next transient time, that starts right now. We open our hearts to change, and work to BE the change we desire in our hurting world. We engage.
