Isn’t this true? The musical Wicked includes this song lyric at the end, as two friends, then bitter enemies, reconcile. It touched my heart, as I truly believe each of us is changed for good as we rub up against each other in this busy, complex life. We may not always agree. We may have ups and downs in our relationships. But because we are trying, because we are making the effort to live in love, God blesses us to change for good.
It may not be obvious. It may not be immediate. We may not see how we have changed and grown until many years, maybe a lifetime, has passed. The key to our growth and happiness is to not give up, to refuse discouragement when relationships fall on hard times, to allow the possibility for being changed (and changing others) for good.
It’s a two-way street, a duet. It isn’t a matter of one person giving and the other receiving, but rather both give and both receive the love and care, and both are stretched and changed. This is God’s plan for us – to live in community and grow with one another. We never give up, on ourselves or the people around us. God never gives up on us! God brings people into our lives for his reasons, and we are called to interact, always, without judgment and with his love. We will be changed for good
