The value of THIS moment

It’s just a moment. No big deal! I’m just waiting in line, or driving home, or watching the dinner cook. Later there will be more important moments, when we eat the dinner, or I arrive at checkout, or visit with loved ones. But this moment, oh, it’s just sort of wasted.

Have we ever given weight to the importance of the moments of our day? Do we assign value based on our own ideas of what is important? How does God see it?

I believe that God values each precious moment of our lives. Nothing is wasted in God’s eyes, but each experience and use of time is part of his eternal plan for our benefit. Why do we “throw away” the time we feel is less significant?

The mindfulness movement is one way to approach this dilemma. Mindfulness teaches that every moment is precious, and changing! If we are feeling sad, or joyful, or worried, that is now. It will certainly change and the way we can get the most out of our moments is to recognize that our mind will see our current situation in different ways from one minute to the next.

When we get to the end of the day, do we look back and only remember the phone call about the broken air conditioner? or the phone tree that took an hour of our precious time? Or do we marvel at the things we noticed while on hold: like the hummingbirds at the feeder, like the fan that brings such comfort, like the smile from a friend. We have a choice. Our days can be filled with precious moments, or just a montage of highlights. Why would we not embrace every now? Maybe out of habit, or the emphasis of the world on “getting things done.” Sometimes the in-between moments can be the most meaningful of all.
